A Sacred February at Savitri Bhavan: Living the Work of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother in Auroville

February holds a special place in the spiritual calendar of Auroville. It is a month imbued with aspiration and gratitude, marked by the birthday of the Mother on 21 February and the founding of Auroville on 28 February—a living experiment dedicated to human unity and the evolution of consciousness.

At the heart of this sacred time, Savitri Bhavan continues its vital work as a centre for study, reflection and inner progress, offering seekers from around the world an opportunity to engage deeply with the vision of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.

A Living Centre of Conscious Transformation

Throughout February, Savitri Bhavan invites participants into multiple dimensions of spiritual exploration. Central to its work is Savitri—Sri Aurobindo’s mantric epic that contains, as the Mother described, “all the answers to all your questions.” Regular study circles, readings, satsangs and meditative practices allow both long-time practitioners and newcomers to approach this profound work with clarity and openness.

The Permanent Exhibitions, including Meditations on Savitri—472 paintings created by the Mother with Huta—and a photographic life sketch of Sri Aurobindo, continue to offer a powerful visual and contemplative experience. These spaces are complemented by the Library and Digital Library, which serve as invaluable resources for ongoing study.

Supporting the Next Generation of Seekers

One of the most moving aspects of Savitri Bhavan’s work this month has been its engagement with young people. In January, around 30 participants from the Sri Aurobindo Society All India Youth Camp took part in a special Introduction to Savitri session. Through guided reflections, exhibitions and shared dialogue, many discovered that this vast and luminous text could feel accessible and deeply relevant to their own inner journeys.

Participants later shared how the experience shifted their perspective, awakening a renewed aspiration to continue engaging with Savitri. These sessions will be offered again in February, open to all, extending this invitation to a wider circle of seekers.

Honouring Ancient Wisdom and the Evolutionary Journey

February also brings a special focus on Ilion, Sri Aurobindo’s epic reimagining of the fall of Troy. Through a series of presentations, the Ilion Auroville team explores ancient Greek myths as living symbols of the soul’s evolutionary journey—addressing themes such as fear and doubt, the necessity of effort, ego, illusion and conscious choice on the spiritual path.

These presentations reflect Sri Aurobindo’s broader vision: that humanity stands at a threshold between ages, with the possibility of conscious participation in its own transformation.

The Mother’s Presence and the Life Divine

The month is suffused with remembrance and gratitude for the Mother—her life, her words and her constant guidance. The House of the Mother’s Agenda, where recordings of her Agenda are listened to regularly, offers a rare and intimate contact with her inner journey and work for the earth’s transformation.

Film screenings, full moon gatherings, guided meditations and the Dream Divine series further enrich this sacred atmosphere, reinforcing Auroville’s role as a “laboratory of consciousness.”

Auroville: A Continuing Experiment in Unity

As we honour the birth of Auroville at the end of the month, we are reminded that it is not merely a place, but a collective aspiration—to manifest a new way of living based on truth, harmony and the descent of a higher consciousness.

The activities at Savitri Bhavan this February stand as a quiet yet powerful testament to this ongoing work. They reflect the living legacy of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, carried forward through study, practice, beauty and shared aspiration.

The Sri Aurobindo Trust UK is honoured to share in and support this work, which continues to inspire seekers across generations and continents.

“The Mother’s power and not any human endeavour… can alone bring down into this world of obscurity and suffering Truth and Light and Life divine.”
— Sri Aurobindo
